Busting the Myth; Self-Build is Costly and High Risk

With the right advice, and careful forward planning, it is perfectly possible to stick to a budget. And there are ways to limit the cost of building your own home. The cost will vary depending on the construction method you choose, the size of your project and how involved you can be in the process.  Research shows most self-build a home for less than you would pay for buying a comparable home – and it is to your design.

Getting experienced and professional planning, design and construction assistance to ensure your project is well managed from start to finish will minimise the risk of any mishaps along the way.

Busting the Myth of Self Build with NaCSBA: It’s a Very Lengthy Process

From finding a plot to the completion of a project can take a year or two, or sometimes longer. It very much depends on what, and how, you want to build – a single inner-city plot with a bespoke design will take longer than a serviced plot and a factory-built home. Custom building is often the fastest route, as it usually involves serviced plots, which means the services and infrastructure (like roads) are taken care of, and some form of planning permission is guaranteed.

Busting the Myth of Self Build with NaCSBA: I Won’t get Planning Permission

Achieving planning permission can be a complex task, with many technical considerations, policy restrictions and physical barriers arising to development. However, ‘Never has self-build been treated more favourably by the planning system’. The Right to Build, along with acknowledgement within the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) of the importance of meeting the needs of those wishing to build their own home means that the current situation for custom- and self-builders is more promising.

Sustainable, well-considered schemes that takes account of local and national policy can take advantage of the Right to Build and other policy designations to add extra weight to their proposal to give them the best possible chance of securing permission.
