Refining some of the research set out in Circular Ceramics by Sara Howard, Ellie has been working on a glaze made from waste. “People think of making ceramics as predominantly a natural process – but mining raw materials in particular for glazes is destroying the planet. We even could be running out of sand.” Accordingly, Ellie sourced industrial waste from local industries (mainly glass and stone slurry destined for landfill) and created ceramic glazes, scientifically testing and carefully documenting many chemicals, mixes and reactions. She is finding a new way to utilise waste and, yes – “celebrate its beauty.” Ellie’s ceramics are for sale through her website.
