On-trend or timeless. They are two terms used in myriad consumer sectors, from fashion and jewellery to interior design.

But, when planning a new kitchen, what makes an individual prefer one over the other?

Brands the world over spend vast sums researching the tastes of their target markets; this isn’t merely confined to style preferences and functionality requirements – we’re talking about people’s lifestyles. Kitchens are now being designed to reflect a person’s whole way of living.

Past generations regarded the kitchen as an essential basic, serving the functional needs of an individual or family. But that has changed dramatically over the last few years. The kitchen has fast become the heart of the home; a place for all things – cooking, eating, entertaining, socialising and kicking back.

Moreover, not only is it increasingly the hub of all indoor activity, the kitchen is now providing a seamless transition from the inside of a home to the great outdoors, breathing in all that nature has to offer.

It should come as no surprise that, as well as getting to grips with the desires of their long-standing customers, kitchen design companies are probing the tastes of younger homeowners. After all, it will be the needs and desires of this generation that will help steer the direction of kitchen design in years to come.

One company that has recently undertaken research of this nature is PWS with its premium kitchen brand, 1909 – a collection of painted, in-frame, timber kitchens evolving from classic designs.

And, according to this in-depth study, ‘timeless’ is where it’s now at. It seems that younger homeowners are feeling more nostalgic about classic kitchens than their trend seeking forefathers.

No doubt, they have been inspired by the glut of popular cooking and baking programmes of late. They want a kitchen that makes them feel all warm and cosy inside and will stand the test of time, but, just as importantly, has all the latest mod cons.

This summer, 1909 launched a‘re-energised’ timeless collection to suit both traditional and contemporary homes, including four new signature looks – Ovolo, Shaker, Georgian and a softened industrial ‘Slab’ kitchen. The new designs sit alongside the existing Half Pencil, Scalloped and Quarter Round.

The new range features five new colours spanning blush tones to denim and dusky blues to warm greys – Dry Rose, Cadet Blue, Storm Blue, Dust Grey and Putty.

According to PWS, ‘classic’ is being redefined; it now combines heritage with contemporary elements to create a timeless feel with neutral simplicity among the cornerstones.

Trends will still come and go, and technology continues to advance, but a timeless kitchen that fully embraces modern life is a winning formula. Functionality aside, a nostalgic connection with your kitchen that you know will stand the test of time is everlasting.
