OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND

Stella Corrall of Lucentia Design has always been passionate about well-being and sustainability. This has led her to develop plastic recycling processes that overcome some of the technical challenges that waste plastics present. Originally developed for manufactured products, these unique materials are now also used in her bespoke artworks. By presenting aesthetically desirable recycled plastics she aims to raise awareness around plastic waste and to challenge its perceived value.

This installation, ‘Out of sight, Out of Mind’, aims to fuel conversations about how we need to shift attitudes away from despising plastic waste towards seeing it as a valuable resource. Stella has linked with Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and their Living Seas ‘Waves of Waste’ beach cleans in order to source marine plastics to be recycled into the installation. The components have been created from a variety of non-readily recycled plastics waste including fishing rope, plastic bags and packaging. They also embed decommissioned bank notes to highlight the wasted value of these discarded plastics. There is no ‘away’ with this fantastic and incredibly durable material, we must not discard it: it is a precious commodity so the need to reuse, collect and recycle it is paramount for a sustainable future.
