With the autumn finally upon us, although we may be looking forward to the festivities of the season, unfortunately our homes are at risk of being targeted by opportunistic thieves. The night’s drawing in and the clocks going back is always an incentive for thieves to attempt a potential break-in, so securing your home with the most up to date security products is vital in protecting what matters most to you.
With this in mind, Yale, the security expert, has offered some top tips to update your home security this season!
Double check all locks are secure
As simple as this sounds, statistics have shown that 13%* of people leave their front door unlocked, and a surprisingly high 33% of people don’t check that their windows are securely locked when attending Halloween or Bonfire Night events*! Simply upgrading your door locks can help to prevent break-ins at this vulnerable time of year. If you have external timber doors, they should be secured with a mortice lock and/or nightlatch that meets the British Standard BS3621, or if you have a PVCu door then we would suggest upgrading the cylinder to a British Standard Kitemark TS007.
Out of sight, out of mind
Another simple step in preventing burglars from targeting your home is to make sure you don’t leave valuables in plain sight. Burglars can scope out properties to see if they are worth breaking into, so making sure you keep expensive gadgets, jewellery and valuables out of sight is a very simple, but important step.
Raise the alarm
Recent statistics have shown that homes with an alarm system are 60% less likely to be burgled**, which highlights just how effective an alarm can be in protecting your home. Not only does it alert neighbours in the event of a break-in, but it also acts as a visual deterrent, meaning potential burglars will go elsewhere. Smart alarm systems are now available so you can control your system easily, with the help of a smartphone. Yale has a range of Smart Alarm systems which provide a high level of security to your home, providing peace of mind that you and your family are safe and secure.
The key is CCTV!
Another great way to prevent your home from being targeted by criminals is to install a CCTV system. As well as also being a great visual deterrent to burglars, with statistics revealing that homes with CCTV are 90% less likely to be burgled***, in the unfortunate circumstance that you do experience a burglary, CCTV footage can be used to help in police enquires, offering additional information about the case.
Nowadays, there is also a wide range of smart CCTV systems available so you can monitor your home whilst you’re away, giving you added reassurance and peace of mind that your home is secure.
To update your home security to the 21st century, smart locks are now available, including Yale’s Conexis® L1 Smart Door Lock, which means your smartphone is now your key. The lock can provide notifications when loved ones are home safely, and mobile keys can also be issued and revoked when necessary, allowing homeowners to know exactly who has access to their home.
