What is it?
LAMDA® is an innovative rigid building material made from coarse British sheep wool. Developed by Manchester-based Wull Technologies, it transforms an undervalued natural fibre into strong, handleable panels with potential applications in thermal insulation, acoustic treatment and the retrofit of existing buildings.
LAMDA® finds a valuable new use for coarse British wool, a renewable and durable natural resource that currently has limited commercial value.
Using a patent-pending, low-impact manufacturing process, Wull Technologies is developing the material as an alternative for the built environment, with a particular focus on improving existing and hard-to-treat homes.
Its potential goes beyond insulation. By creating greater demand for British wool, LAMDA® could help strengthen a domestic supply chain and return more of the value generated by wool-based products to farmers and rural communities.
The Story Behind ItLAMDA® began through an Innovate UK-funded project exploring breathable external wall insulation for older and hard-to-treat homes.
Since then, Wull Technologies has refined its formulation and manufacturing process, reduced the density of the panels and undertaken thermal, acoustic and fire testing. Pilot manufacturing capability has been established and LAMDA® has already been used in its first real-world acoustic installation in Manchester.
The company is now working with the UK Centre for Moisture in Buildings to explore its development as a rigid thermal retrofit product, including how insulation and moisture movement interact with the existing fabric of older buildings.
