Action against wasted fleece
Grace is a sixth generation farmer. Her family has 1040 acres, a mixture of arable and livestock with 1000 ewes and 60 cows. “British wool is now largely worthless so I am campaigning to rebuild the industry.”In 2021, Grace’s family received just £135 in total for 1000 fleeces - approximately 14p per fleece. Such shocking and widespread prices force many farmers to burn their wool. Grace’s Flock portfolio is part design, part craft and part activism, with digital embroideries on washed, carded and felted wool from her own flock. “I have loved working with our flock’s wool. The textile industry should use this fibre as an invaluable resource for a sustainable future.” Her activism is ongoing, and she is working with a group of young farmers in the National Sheep Association.
