Callum’s Slice Table
Callum’s Slice Table is made from two folded pieces of sandblasted aluminium and six pieces of sliced silver birch, which minimises timber wastage by using the whole width of the trunk. Each slice is connected to a board which sits under the tabletop. This allows slices to move independently without splitting and also strengthens the tabletop. The legs, made from metal in its raw state, contrast effectively with the natural look of the top. “Stopping the wood from splitting was the challenge - there was a particularly large split on one of the slices. So I used a bow tie joint to stop future defects.” By cutting waste, this design shows how milling timber can be more eco-friendly.
