We were commissioned to replace a conservatory with an extension not only to provide a good kitchen/dining/living space but change the focus of the windows to provide sky views and a view through a gap between the neighbouring buildings to a distant stand of trees. The 30° skewed plan provides the key views out by orientating the internal layout away from the houses to the side and rear while also allowing natural light to flood into the space through large rooflights. All this achieved while still providing privacy from the house to the rear and side of the property.

We always make it clear to our clients that on Day 1 anything is possible, in order to tease-out their highest aspirations. Whilst issues of cost, planning, neighbours, space etc have to be managed, understanding the key drivers for the clients, combined with our skills and experience, leads to a more successful project. This new extension has completely transformed the existing house and although only modest in footprint the impact internally is huge due to the volume created by the new roof, with its large rooflight, and the large sliding door focused on the view. The existing sitting room was oversized and was therefore reduced in size, the 2m of space gained incorporated into the new kitchen extension instead to provide well-proportioned rooms throughout whilst reducing the size of the extension needed.

Whilst another Architect may have just added a simple linear extension to the rear of the existing fairly typical ‘developer’ house, we took time to appraise the context and the clients’ aspirations, making the key design decision to angle the plan and big sliding door to focus views out between the neighbouring buildings down a field to a copse, rather than looking into the windows of the adjacent property.

We also focused on quality rather than quantity and by making modifications to the interior of the existing house – including a new staircase - it meant that the new extension flowed seamlessly from the existing spaces. This is a fantastic example of how making small changes can deliver excellent value. This project epitomises the expression “Don’t move, Improve!”

As a registered Superhome it was important to ensure whatever alterations were made to the existing home would enhance its performance further. As committed Eco-Architects we are very experienced at working with MMC and were able to help the client decide on a build system, SIPs panels from Bentley Systems, and this support is invaluable for any client. The ‘fabric first’ approach, with its robust and high-performing build system will continue to pay dividends long into the future and is protected against the effects of climate change.

In the end, true sustainability comes from creating something the owners will love, and that is our ultimate goal.
