With a plethora of options ranging from chic pods to repurposed summerhouses and revamped garden rooms, extending our living spaces beyond our four walls has never been easier. Garden office ideas offer a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the main residence, providing ample opportunity to focus and be productive.

Ideas to inspire your garden office

Undoubtedly, working from home has its perks, such as the ability to dress in comfortable clothing and the luxury of extra time in bed. However, staying motivated to work while in one’s own environment can prove challenging. After all, our homes are our sanctuaries for relaxation and unwinding after a long day.

Fortunately, having a garden office provides a viable solution to this issue. With the increasing prevalence of home-working, perhaps it’s time to venture into the garden and explore the possibilities of a garden office – a fresh start for a productive day.

Is planning permission required?

The beauty of garden offices and pods lies in their simplicity and ease of installation. Typically, these enchanting sanctuaries can be constructed from sheds or summer houses in compliance with permitted development regulations, making them exempt from planning permission and foundation requirements. According to Charles Walton, structures that are less than 2.5m in height and occupy less than 50% of the garden space are usually exempt from planning permission, except when located in the front garden. However, it’s important to note that councils and neighbourhoods may have their own regulations, and the response of neighbours may also impact the outcome. Therefore, we recommend seeking guidance from the appropriate governing council to ensure that all planning permission requirements for your garden haven are met.
