Over eight years and nine series, more than 50 beautiful spaces have been rebuilt, restored or reimagined. Dick and Angel have found creative and ingenious ways of transforming an abandoned French Chateau into an incredible family home.

Audiences from over 63 countries have watched as The Chateau revealed its secrets and inspired Angel to create a range of distinctive designs combining her love for Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and illustration with the stories of her home.

The Story of The Chateau as seen in Escape to the Chateau (series 1-9)

Series One: The Wallpaper Museum

In episode 3, Angel makes her first official visit to the attic. In amongst the cobwebs, and with baby Dorothy on her hip, she opens the door to a 15-foot-tall armoire. To her amazement, inside is roll upon roll of the most beautiful wallpaper, original off-cuts from designs that once adorned the Chateau walls.

With the help of Dick's meticulous calculations, Angel cut each wallpaper design into diamond shapes, carefully pasting every piece to the turret walls in the Honeymoon Suite. Elegant braiding was pinned along the edges to finish the look.

"The Wallpaper Museum is a celebration of the Chateau's history. I wanted to share this amazing discovery, the joy of the colours and designs, and for this history to live on in people's memories."

The Helter-Skelter

Ensuring there is plenty of fun for Arthur and Dorothy is always on the agenda! In episode 4, Angel wanted a Helter-Skelter for the playroom, so Dick got to work building one!

The Kitchen Tiles

Episode 3 saw the transformation of the Strawbridge family kitchen. No room at the Chateau would be complete without some personal touches, so Angel got to work printing bespoke tiles to represent the family and their home.

The decorative tiles are made to order in the exact designs you will find in Dick and Angel's kitchen. From the British and French flags to the personalisable Chateau de la Motte Husson tile – you can style these in your own home and even personalise a few to make them perfect for your family.

Series Two: The Diver Tile

When renovating the Botanical Suite in the second episode of this series, Angel was looking for the perfect tile for the bathroom walls. A fan of printing onto tiles for many years, Angel created her own Art Deco-inspired Parisian-style diver tile.

You can recreate the style in your home with The Chateau Diver Tile. We recommend using these as a feature and combining them with simple brick tiles, but if you're looking for a glimpse of the Parisian style, these tiles are ideal for hot plates, trivets or under plant pots! As we print all of these to order, you can also personalise them with your name.

Series Three: Boudoir Candle

Series 3 saw the renovation of the Boudoir Suite, a truly glamourous 1920s-inspired room with a sultry, sophisticated black and gold colour scheme and a double entryway. The gold grout Angel used to fill between the black glossy Victorian tiles was a real talking point.

This Suite inspired our sensuous scented Boudoir Candle. In true boudoir style, the candle is encased in black glass and etched with The Chateau logo and a name of your choice. This charming fragrance opens with fruity notes of tart blackcurrant, apple, and sweet pineapple. A heart of juniper berries, woody birch, and patchouli lies on a sensual base of vanilla, musk, and oakmoss.

Series Five: Potagerie

On the fourth floor of the Chateau, a room patiently awaits some TLC. In series 5, Dick and Angel finally start work on the former servant's quarters— a beautiful room with breathtaking views of the Walled Garden.

The room waited nearly four years to receive the attention it deserved, and in that time, the Walled Garden had begun its transformation – and the view got better and better! "The Potagerie Suite" is a love letter to Dick from Angel, a homage to his beloved Walled Garden.

"The kitchen garden is Dick's passion, though a little outside my comfort zone. That said, there is such strong shape and form that I couldn't resist combining my love for Art Deco shapes with produce from the garden tended so lovingly by my husband. The appearance of carrots, courgettes, artichokes, sweet peas and bees really screams, "Garden!" To complete the cottage garden feel, I took inspiration from the flowers on the original century-old wallpaper in the room."

The Potagerie design is a beautiful way to bring the outside in. Its soft colour palette and versatility mean you can mix it with other prints for a maximalist style or have it on its own as a statement piece.

Wildflower

In the first episode of series 5, Dick, Arthur and Dorothy make it their mission to create a magical place for Angel to grow wild flowers. They sow the seeds for a meadow in front of the Chateau's Orangery. In every series since, we've seen the beautiful meadow blooming in springtime, a haven for gorgeous flowers and pollinators.

"The wild meadow and cutting garden are very special places for me. The abundance of flowers and the creatures living amongst them inspired this whimsical yet elegant design.

The Wildflower design captures the spirit of the untamed surroundings; tendrils intermingle with a rich variety of shapes and forms, creating an alluring web of beauty. I added a sprinkle of Art Nouveau styling to capture the essence of the wild meadow and cutting garden."

Series Six: Recipe Tiles & The Chateau Kitchen Cookbook

Passing down family recipes is a responsibility that no one should take lightly! In the first episode of series 6, Angel prints a few of their most prized and treasured family recipes onto tiles and puts them in the Chateau kitchen.

Mademoiselle Daisy

In episode 5, Dick and Angel revamp their very own adventure bus – a vintage Asquith Van! During its transformation, Angel joked about it feeling very "Driving Miss Daisy", a 30-year-old film loved by Dick and Angel. Thus, the bus was named, but, of course, with the French version! Along with completely redesigning the interior, Angel designed the Mademoiselle Daisy fabric.

"Our first trip in the Asquith was around the Chateau's grounds, so where better to look for inspiration than the wild daisies flowering in abundance for the first time that year. Reimagined with Art Nouveau patterning, the daisy motif combines the great outdoors with rich colouring to create a playful and contemporary design, with a backward glance to carefree times."

Mademoiselle Daisy is a truly maximalist design. The vibrant colour palette and bold print on soft velvet are perfect for bringing fun into your home.

Series Eight: Emerald Fan

During the first episode of series 8, we saw one of the most heart-warming transformations yet! Dick and Angel were working on the renovation of Papi and Café Grandma's new bedroom suite in the Coach House. To make it extra special, Angel designed a print just for them and finished the room with a cuddle cushion made by Arthur and Dorothy.

Synonymous with traditional Japanese dress, the kimono encompasses Angel's love of everything vintage. Combined with beautiful hand-held fans, flower motifs and elegant Art Deco design, Emerald Fan draws us into an age of glamour and effortless style.

The vibrant colour palette of teal, light blue, and mustard contrasts perfectly to make a bold statement. This design, illustrated with fans, flowers, and 1920s-inspired motifs, gives true showstopping vibes. In the episode, we see Angel use this print as a feature wallpaper for her parents, styling it with modern, French-inspired rattan furniture.

Series Nine: Bamboo Folly

In episode 3 of the series 9, Dick and Angel make a discovery in the Walled Garden. Hidden beneath the ivy is something rather special in need of some TLC - a 19th-century folly. One hundred and fifty years ago, the original owners would have designed the folly for fun and delight, and now Dick and Angel want to return it to its original purpose. Behind the folly is a bamboo forest, and there are plans to build a secret door to this enchanting world. This inspired Angel's design, The Bamboo Folly.

"Inside the Walled Garden, we found a stunning folly. Until 2022, we had no idea how magical it was! Behind the folly is a bamboo forest that has given our family hours of fun. It is a magical place that transports you to another world, and with the heron being the Japanese symbol of good fortune, this design celebrates all the wonders of nature here at the Chateau."
