Choosing a Bi-fold Door

All bi-fold doors are not built equal - there are various factors to consider before you make such an important purchase. We’ve created a breakdown of five key areas for consideration.

Try Before You Buy

Bi-folding doors are not all the same, the quality and finish can vary enormously, there is no substitution for seeing and operating the product yourself. The mechanism and ease of use can vary drastically between brands. A bi-folding door can be superb addition to your home, adding value for many years; however some products have cheaper parts which are likely to result in a far shorter lifespan and demand more upkeep. An example to look out for is nylon runners which are far less effective, or long lasting when compared to their more robust stainless steel counterparts.

Weather Resistance

We produce secure systems which don’t rattle in the wind and which offer extensive noise reduction from both weather and traffic noise, a highly important factor for any door. Doors should offer full protection from the elements during inclement weather but to allow natural light to flood through the property on sunnier days, bringing homely warmth to relax and unwind in. Our popular systems are even hurricane tested for the American Market.

Building Regulations

Building regulations are constantly updated, so be sure to confirm that the doors you wish to buy pass the current regulations. Also keep the certificates provided; you’ll need those when you sell your home. For instance, new builds now need to comply with PAS24 (security standard).

Thermal Performance

Any additional expanse of glass can result in increased heat loss, so energy performance is an important factor to consider. Superior thermal insulation is a feature of The Bi-Fold Door, a new to the market aluminium bi-folding door system that is the result of over 30 years’ experience producing dynamic glazing solutions. The revolutionary system’s thermal transmittance value corresponds to the guidelines for passive house suitability with an achieved Uw value as low as 0.8 W/m2K – and this is despite its modest depth of only 84.2mm, combining modern design with superior energy-efficiency.

The quality of a bi-fold door is determined by what you cannot see on the outside: heat is lost via the profiles, in which Solarlux incorporates precisely engineered thermal breaks (air chambers) in order to reach a low u-value. The Bi-Fold Door’s thermal break, called bionic turtle, currently has six patents pending.

Be Security Aware

Our highly popular SL 60e and SL 80/81 folding glass doors have been tested and classified to PAS24 (the standard defining performance requirements for improved security of doors and windows for the British market), exceeding the stringent testing parameters for burglar resistance. We have scheduled testing for our brand new the Bi-Fold Door and look forward having another product achieve this classification.
